Illinois Child Support Information Page

Welcome to the Illinois child support Information page. The purpose of this page is to give you some basic information regarding child support issues for your children in the state of Illinois. This web page is intended for informational purposes only and it is highly recommended that you consult an attorney to discuss your child support questions.

Child support in Illinois is governed by the provisions of 750 ILCS 5/505 which sets forth the minimum child support that the non custodial or residential parent will be ordered to pay. I have provided an Illinois Child Support Calculator to give you an idea of the amount of child support that you are entitled to receive or the amount that you may be ordered to pay. It is always recommended that you consult with a family law attorney to verify these amounts. View our calculator to get a rough idea of the amounts you may need to pay.

In addition to child support payments in Illinois, both parents, in most instances, have an obligation to make a financial contribution to the following child related expenses:

  • Medical insurance for their children
  • Make payments towards uninsured medical expenses of the children
  • Day care expenses of the children
  • Educational expenses
  • Extracurricular activities expenses

Child support payments in Illinois are generally paid by way of an Order of Withholding from the child support payer’s paycheck. These funds are then paid to the Illinois State Disbursement Unit whose responsibilities include the disbursement of the child support payments to the individuals entitled to the money, record keeping of the amount of child support payments to the individuals entitled to the money, record keeping of the amount of child support paid and referral to the respective State’s Attorney’s Offices for enforcement of the child support orders issued by the courts.

Child support in Illinois may also be extended past a child’s 18th birthday or graduation from high school. Parents of disabled children may be ordered to pay support to assist their disabled adult children. Parents in Illinois also have an obligation to pay for the post high school educational expenses of their children.

I have also included a page to assist you in collecting unpaid child support. Unpaid child support payments become a judgment in your favor the day they are due. These Judgments earn nine percent (9%) interest per annum and in many of the cases the court may order that the non paying parent pay your costs, expenses, and attorney fees incurred in the collection of these past due child support payments.

As I stated above, the purpose of this page is to assist you with some basic information regarding child support issues in the State of Illinois. It is highly recommended that you consult with an attorney to further assist you in these areas.
